Live Music Alert: TONIGHT, Oct 5 at The Aquarium, Fargo ND, 9:45 pm, $10, 21+; Oct 8  Cabooze, Minneapolis, MN

In an unusual tour design, the Sorry For Partying roadshow puts Colorado’s Kinetix, Minnesota’s Roster McCabe, and Massachusettes’ The Brew on the bus together. These three festival favorites will be offering their individual band dynamics as they alternate headlining.

Most joint tours have a permanent headliner with other bands providing stage warm-ups. But these bands decided to work that differently. According to Adam Lufkin (rhythm guitar, vocals) of the band Kinetix, all three bands have been super supportive of each other, always coming to each other’s shows when they could. They also realized that each of them had a strong fan base in their respective areas. So they decided to apply a strategic booking arrangement. Each band will headline in its regional market wherever they have the strongest draw. “We’ll switch from city to city,” Lufkin said. “We’ll all have our time at the top and one bands’ fans will be able to check out the other bands.”

The tour can then add venue after venue where each band is popular, picking up fans all across the nation. The tour takes the band from Denver, Colorado to Unity, Maine.

Kinetix

The five-piece Kinetix pulled together a rocking funk sound six years that locked down slots at premier venues in Denver, Chicago, Boston, and New York City. They soon morphed into a rock/pop sound that took the nation by storm and landed them at Wakarusa, Forecastle, 10KLF, Bella Vita, and Bella Madre.

Part of their success is their musical technique. “We were all studying jazz at Denver University and started playing rock and funk music,” Lufkin said. “We played well together and enjoyed each other.” They took their act on the road just a year later and have never stopped.

Kinetix fist disc, a studio album, was released in 2005. But they employed another unique marketing strategy with the second, a live disc, that they recorded for the 10,000 Lakes Festival where they played. “We made 5,000 of them,” Lufkin said. “We handed out about 3,000 of them at the festival to spread the music.”

That paid off. A full length album, Talking Faces, came out in 2007 and this year they released Let Me In. That album charted 27 on Itunes rock chart and has been played on hundreds and hundred of radio stations.

Most albums are collaboratively written by Luftin and the band. Those members are Eric Blumenfeld  (vocals, keys), Jordan Linit (lead guitar), Josh Fairman (bass), and Mike Beck (drums).

The Brew

The Brew

From Amesbury, MA, the Brew’s four band member simmer up a musical stew with generous helpings of classic rock, prog, jazz, reggae, world beat, indie, funk, and even orchestral pop, sometimes in the course of a single song—much like Umphrey’s McGee did in its early days. This is a band definitely not to miss.

Not only will audiences see what each band can produce in their distinct musical styles, but expect some surprises in this tour. “We’re having members sitting in with each band. We’ve split up different songs just to do that,” Lufkin added. “That way it will be fun for everybody.”
